About the Festival

The Yangpyeong Yongmunsan Wild Edible Greens Festival began in 2008, based on historical records. According to the 15th-century "Sejong Sillok Jiriji" (Geographical Treatise in the Annals of King Sejong), Yangpyeong offered local specialties such as jujubes, rock tripe, oyster mushrooms, and jicho (reishi mushrooms) to the state, and its local products included wild mustard and singamchae (Angelica gigas). Furthermore, Yangpyeong's wild edible greens also appeared in Yu Deuk-gong's poem "Feeding Scholars with Two Wild Edible Greens from Yongmunsan," a scholar of the Silhak (Practical Learning) school, indicating their excellent taste and aroma. In "Donggukyeojiji" (Geography of Korea), a geographical treatise compiled by Yu Hyeong-won, a Silhak scholar of the Joseon Dynasty, it is recorded that 'Yongmunsan wild edible greens are the best tribute to the king.' Now, as the Wild Edible Greens Festival celebrates its 15th anniversary, Yangpyeong's wild edible greens still maintain their excellence.
