About the Festival

Gwangju, since ancient times, has been known as a city of taste, benefiting from nature's bounty with its plains, mountains, fields, and sea harmoniously spread around the Yeongsan River. Among its culinary delights, Gwangju Kimchi embodies the richest flavors and atmosphere, so much so that it is known by its unique names, Jeollado Kimchi and Gwangju Kimchi. Gwangju Kimchi is characterized by the generous use of various vegetables and seasonings such as anchovy sauce, glutinous rice paste, and sesame seeds. Selecting fresh ingredients, carefully preparing them, fermenting them using the most basic methods, and adding a touch of personal flair – this is the special recipe for Gwangju Kimchi. The Gwangju World Kimchi Festival is a place for citizens to experience our unique food culture and traditions embodied in kimchi, and as Korea's representative kimchi festival, it is a celebration for everyone to enjoy together. It can be called a substantial festival where transactions and promotions between kimchi producers and consumers take place simultaneously.
