About the Festival
The Lotus Lantern Festival features a lantern parade from Dongdaemun Stadium to Jogyesa Temple, as well as traditional culture events, Eoullim Madang (Lantern Dharma Ceremony), and Hoehyang Hanmadang (Daedong Hanmadang). With a long history of over 1,200 years and passed down as a living cultural heritage, the Lotus Lantern Festival was designated as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage in April 2012, recognized for its value as an intangible heritage. Its values of voluntary community, generational transmission with individual creativity, and participation, consideration, and equality among diverse people were globally recognized, leading to its inscription on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in December 2020.
