About the Festival

The Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival, held in Hwacheon, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, is a unique winter festival that was selected as one of CNN's '7 Wonders of Winter' in 2011. The festival takes place every January when the Hwacheoncheon Stream, famous for its clear water, freezes solid. Visitors can experience catching sancheoneo (mountain trout), known as the queen of the valley, through ice fishing and bare-hand fishing. Beyond the thrill of ice fishing, the sancheoneo can be enjoyed immediately as sashimi or grilled. In addition to fishing, various winter activities such as ice sledding, snow sledding, and bobsledding are offered, attracting over a million visitors annually.
