About the Festival
The 96th Chunhyang Festival, boasting the deepest history and tradition in Korea, will brightly adorn Namwon's spring this April. The Chunhyang Festival is a traditional cultural festival that began in 1931 during the Japanese colonial period, initiated voluntarily by Namwon citizens to boost national pride and commemorate the noble spirit of Seong Chunhyang. It is the progenitor of performance-art-type festivals in Korea and the nation's oldest historical asset, having resonated with citizens for 96 years of profound history. The festival originated from a ritual commemorating 'Dano,' the day Chunhyang and Yi Mong-ryong first met, and is now leaping forward as a global cultural platform where people from all over the world can enjoy and communicate together, beyond Korea. This festival is particularly characterized by the harmony of the tranquil scenery of Gwanghalluwon Garden and modern light productions. During the day, it offers the dynamic excitement of traditional performances, and at night, it provides a lyrical atmosphere under romantic starlight, delivering unforgettable emotion to visitors. The 96th Chunhyang Festival, unfolding in a space where the most Korean sentiments breathe, is a harmonious venue where tradition, modernity, and the world connect as one.
