About the Festival
Seonnongdaeje is a representative traditional cultural festival of Dongdaemun-gu that modernly recreates 'Seonnongje', a traditional rite to pray for a bountiful harvest and offer sacrifices to Shennong (God of Agriculture) and Houji. It inherits the historical value of a national ritual from the Joseon Dynasty, where the king personally prayed for a good harvest, offered sacrifices, and performed the 'Chingyeongnye' (royal plowing ceremony) with the people to look after their livelihoods. The main event takes place at Seonnongdan Altar in Jegi-dong, Dongdaemun-gu, and the performance of ancestral rites according to traditional methods, along with the reenactment of the royal procession, are considered major attractions. In particular, to commemorate the origin of Seolleongtang, which is said to have been bestowed by the king to the people after the rites, a tasting event is held at the venue where gukbap (rice soup) is cooked in large cauldrons and shared. Marking its 47th anniversary, this event is not merely a reenactment of the past but has established itself as a cultural venue where local residents and tourists can interact.
