About the Festival
The Sejong Nakhwa Festival is a festival that reinterprets traditional culture in a modern way, based on Sejong's Buddhist Nakhwa ritual (designated as a municipal intangible cultural heritage on Feb 13, 2024). It is a special night tourism festival where the nature of the lakeside park and the urban landscape blend together in the city center. When Nakhwabong (fire sticks) are hung from branches, poles, or ropes and lit, embers scatter like flower petals with a crackling sound, beautifully coloring the night forest. Nakhwa originated from our unique traditional rituals performed during Buddhist Lantern Festivals, Jeongwol Daeboreum (First Full Moon), Dano (Spring Festival), and the full moon of the seventh month, to ward off evil spirits and pray for good fortune. You can enjoy the spectacle of embers scattering from Nakhwabong hanging on pine trees in various ways, such as by "fire gazing" from a fixed spot or by walking along the park's trails.
