Jinan Plateau Unjangsan Gorosoe Festival

About the Festival

As the cold winter passes and spring approaches, it's time for the Gorosoe sap from Jinan Plateau's Unjangsan Mountain to emerge. Jinan Plateau Unjangsan Gorosoe, a natural beverage that can only be drunk in spring, primarily comes from Gorosoe tree clusters at an altitude of 600m or higher. Gorosoe sap is extracted when, during cold nights, the roots of the Gorosoe tree absorb water from the ground, filling its stem with sap. As night passes and day arrives, temperatures rise and sunlight causes the moisture and air inside the stem to expand, reducing pressure. The moisture within the Gorosoe stem then tries to exit, and by drilling a hole (perforation), the Gorosoe sap flows out. The greater the daily temperature difference, the more sap can be collected. Jinan Plateau, as the only plateau region in Southern Korea, has a large daily temperature difference, creating an ideal climate for collecting high-quality Gorosoe sap.
