About the Festival
Heave-ho! The Gijisi Tug-of-War, uniting the global village with a rope, is a globally recognized cultural heritage, inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list in 2015 along with Vietnam, Cambodia, and the Philippines. The highlight of the Gijisi Tug-of-War Festival is a grand performance of harmony, where an enormous rope weighing 40 tons, measuring 200 meters in length and 1 meter in diameter, is pulled for over 1 km to stage a tug-of-war match. Strangers come together to move the rope, combining their strength, and soon become friends, cheering together. Every year, countless domestic and international tourists visit Gijisi, Dangjin, to participate in the Gijisi Tug-of-War Festival and enjoy the spectacular event.
