About the Festival
The Donghak Peasant Revolution Commemoration Festival is a meaningful event held every May (solar calendar) to honor the autonomous reform movement of peasants who rose up against the unjust oppression of the feudal system during the Joseon Dynasty. The Donghak Peasant Revolution is considered a historical event that marked the starting point of Korea's modernization and significantly influenced the national independence movement. This revolution began with the Gobu Peasant Uprising led by Jeon Bong-jun on January 10, 1894, and subsequently spread nationwide after the peasant army achieved their first victory in the Battle of Hwangtohyeon. In particular, the commemoration festival has been held annually on May 11, the victory day of the Battle of Hwangtohyeon. The Donghak Peasant Revolution Commemoration Festival is establishing itself as a venue where citizens can freely participate in various programs and cultural events to reflect on its historical significance and to modernize, inherit, and develop the values of autonomy and equality pursued by the Donghak peasant army. Through this, it aims to connect the spirit of the past with the present era and evolve into a meaningful festival where everyone can empathize and participate.
